CAREER CHANGE ROADMAP

Desires: Are you moving toward something or away from something?

Interests:  What have you always wanted to do?  What are you the “Go To” person for?

Values: What do you value most?  Have you done the Values Card Sort?

Strengths:  What do you believe are your transferrable skills?

Research: Have you done any career market research? www.Online.ONetCenter.org for occupational information.  For careers of the future, check out Bureau of Labor statistics.

Resume: Functional resumes have no job history, highlights skills and talents. Chronological resumes focus on job history.  Use a combination. Do chronological first then from that build a functional resume. Use an “Objective” sentence at the end of the Summary.

Networking: Done any networking / information interviews.  Find a mentor and interview them.  Pull together an Advisory Board.

Interviews:  Establish credibility: practice telling why you are changing careers, and how you feel about starting over.  Show your passion during the interview. Others that have been doing this awhile may be burnt out.

Think Big:  Think entrepreneurial, find a need and fill it.  Research the companies you want to work for, find out what’s missing that they may not be aware of, and have not posted a job for. Write and submit a proposal to fill their need.
